Prevention of foot complications through Diabetes Education

Foot complications are among the most serious and costly complications of diabetes. Nearly 45-89% of diabetes related leg amputations are preventable through educational strategies and timely and efficient foot care. To create awareness among masses regarding the diabetic foot as a complication of diabetes and among people with diabetes regarding their foot care, Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology initiated “National Diabetes and diabetic Foot Program” with the support of World diabetes Foundation. This project particularly emphasized on the training programs for diabetes education and foot care education. “Diploma in Diabetes Education” and “Foot Care assisstant course” were initiated and over 100 Foot Care Assistants and 75 Educators from across the country were trained. Awareness activities were particularly carried out and 5715 people were educated on diabetes through Public Awareness Programmes. Similarly, 6017 children were educated on healthy living via School Awareness Programmes. Literature on Healthy eating and Physical activity was prepared and distributed in School Children. Literature on Diabetes prevention and control, prepared and distributed in general public and people with diabetes. Awareness literature on Diabetic Foot prepared and distributed in general public and people with diabetes.
